I can remember taking a Sunday drive when I was a kid, and we drove up to Havana, then on to Dixon Mounds, near Lewistown. I remember driving past a large farm that often was flooded in the spring. Fast forward to today, that same ground has been converted back into wetlands of the Illinois River. Now, instead of seeing corn or soy beans, or possibly flooded out corn or beans, there is this beautiful wetlands. Time it right, and the bird population is amazing. Pelecans, eagles, ducks of all kinds, and geese use the preserve as a stop over on their migration south in the fall, and back north in the spring. In between, it has become a great spot to fish and just enjoy nature as it was meant to be enjoyed.
